Dusty tails of evaporating exoplanets

Abstract: Context. Evaporating rocky exoplanets, such as KIC 12557548b, eject large amounts of dust, which can trail the planet in a comet-like tail. When such objects occult their host star, the resulting transit signal contains information about the dust in the tail. Aims. We aim to use the detailed shape of the Kepler light curve of KIC 12557548b to constrain the size and composition of the dust grains that make up the tail, as well as the mass loss rate of the planet. Methods. Using a self-consistent numerical model… Show more

“…According to van Lieshout et al (2014), the comet-like tail of KOI 2700b may consist of dust grains composed of corundum (α-Al 2 O 3 ) or iron-rich silicate minerals. Therefore during the modeling we applied selected species, which have similar chemical composition: γ-alumina, enstatite, forsterite, olivine (with 50% magnesium and 50% iron) and pyroxene (with 40% magnesium and 60% iron).…”

“…The evaporation time scale of grains in the tail can be calculated using the equations and tables presented by van Lieshout et al (2014). First, we can approximate the equilibrium vapor pressure as…”
