Abstract: DUP is a prognostic factor that should be considered at an early stage to identify a 'high risk' subgroup of persistent negative symptoms.

“…Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to test predictive validity of DUP, early response gender, and extrapyramidal side effects, which were identified as independent predictors in previous studies (González-Valderrama et al, 2017;Riedel et al, 2012;Schennach-Wolff et al, 2011), as well as variables that were found to be statistically significant in univariate analyses of the current FIGURE 1 Remitters and nonremitters in patients with first-episode schizophrenia involuntarily hospitalized and treated with algorithm-based pharmacotherapy study. Non-response to first-line trials was excluded as an independent variable in regression analysis because of multicollinearity.…”

“…All participants in these studies were voluntarily admitted to inpatient departments, showed moderate illness severity and had provided written informed consent. In another study by González-Valderrama et al (2017), shorter DUP, absence of extrapyramidal symptoms and female gender were significant predictors for remission of negative symptoms after the first 10 weeks of inpatient treatment. Illness severity of participants was not severe in this prospective observational study, and first-person informed consent was obtained.…”

“…This idea was also used in other previous studies (Addington et al, ; Qin et al, ; Ran et al, ). Moreover, some studies found median DUP of 2 months (Kalla et al, ; Qiu et al, ; Schimmelmann et al, ), and 4 months (O'Donoghue et al, ); while other studies dichotomized DUP using the cut‐off point of 3 (Cotter, Zabel, French, & Yung, ; Devi Thakoor et al, ; González‐Valderrama et al, ). Thus, the cut‐off points of 2, 3, and 4 months were also considered in this study in order to see if results could be maintained.…”

“…Duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) was consistently found in association with PNS and might be considered as a risk factor (Edwards et al, 1999;Malla et al, 2004;Chang et al, 2011;Galderisi et al, 2013b;Gonzalez-Valderrama et al, 2015). It might be hypothesized that the association reflects insidious onset of psychosis as well as delayed presentation and access to treatment in patients in which negative symptoms prevail in the clinical picture.…”
