Vaccines have proven themselves as an efficient way to control and eradicate lumpy skin disease (LSD). In addition to the safety and efficacy aspects, it is important to know the duration for which the vaccines confer protective immunity, as this impacts the design of an efficient control and eradication program. We evaluated the duration of immunity induced by a live attenuated vaccine (LSDV LAV) and an inactivated vaccine (LSDV Inac), both based on LSDV. Cattle were vaccinated and challenged after 6, 12 and 18 months for LSDV LAV or after 6 and 12 months for the LSDV Inac. The LSDV LAV elicited a strong immune response and protection for up to 18 months, as no clinical signs or viremia could be observed after a viral LSDV challenge in any of the vaccinated animals. A good immune response and protection were similarly seen for the LSDV Inac after 6 months. However, two animals developed clinical signs and viremia when challenged after 12 months. In conclusion, our data support the annual booster vaccination when using the live attenuated vaccine, as recommended by the manufacturer, which could potentially even be prolonged. In contrast, a bi-annual vaccination seems necessary when using the inactivated vaccine.

Background: Small ruminant morbillivirus (SRMV) is the etiological agent of Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) disease. PPR is one of the most important viral diseases of small ruminant husbandry. In the endemic countries, vaccination is the main way to control this disease. Administering the first PPR vaccine in goat kids requires decreased maternal immunity. Objective:The aim of this study was to determine the decreasing trend of maternal immunity against SRMV in goat kids born from vaccinated goats.Methods: Twenty Saanen goat kids were studied in two groups including control (n = 5, receiving colostrum from unvaccinated goats) and treatment (n = 15, receiving colostrum from vaccinated goats). Virus neutralisation (VN) test was used to evaluate serum specific antibodies against SRMV in goat kids from birth to 100 days of age. Results:The first goat kid (n = 1) in the treatment group was seronegative at the age of 28 days. All the goat kids were seronegative at the age of 100 days. The average serum titre of the goat kids at the age of 70-100 days became negative.Conclusions: Some goat kids became seronegative before reaching the age of receiving the first PPR vaccine. The age of 70-100 days could be a good age range to give the first dose of PPR vaccine to the goat kids, but more studies were needed on the effectiveness of this vaccine at this age range.

Capripoxvirus-induced diseases are commonly described as the most serious poxvirus diseases of production animals, as they have a significant impact on national and global economies. Therefore, they are classified as notifiable infectious diseases to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) which need to be immediately declared due to their considerable and substantial economic impact in endemic regions. Prevention and control of capripoxvirus infections is mainly based on vaccination of susceptible animals. As the 3 capripoxvirus share major neutralization sites, cross-immunity has been reported. A variety of live attenuated and inactivated vaccines have been used for the control of capripoxvirus. In this review, we report safety and efficacy results on animals for different vaccines used against capripoxvirus. We focus precisely on capripoxvirus diseases, namely sheep pox, goat pox, and lumpy skin disease which have a high potential for infection, causing damage to small ruminants and cattle, economic loss due to trade restrictions, limitations on animal movement and implementation of vaccination campaigns.
