Duration and functional outcome of spinal cord injury rehabilitation in the Netherlands

Abstract: Abstract-This study describes the length of stay (LOS) and functional outcome of spinal cord injury (SCI) in the Netherlands and its determinants. Data of 157 patients from eight rehabilitation centers were available. Mean age was 40.0 years and 76.4% were traumatic injuries, 39.8% had tetraplegia, and 69.9% had a motor complete SCI. Median LOS was 240 days (interquartile range 164-322). Median motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores at discharge were 37.3 for persons with complete tetraplegia and 6… Show more

“…14,18,20 The presence of secondary conditions may also have contributed to the variation of LOS, but this factor could not be examined in this study. In addition, different healthcare systems and cultural differences might explain some of the variation in LOS found in the literature.…”

“…In Alberta, length of rehabilitation stay in the period between 1994 and 1999 for a person with a complete spinal cord injury was a median of 139 days 3 as compared to 195 days in the Netherlands, 37 and approximately 71 days in the US. 38 The differential lengths of stays may have a profound effect on the readiness states of individuals with SCI, and the delivery options for information about prevention of secondary conditions.…”

“…The Dutch version of the FIM was used for this study. 17 The items were scored on a seven-point scale (1 (completely dependent)À7 (independent)) and the 13 items were added together to obtain an overall FIM motor score, ranging from 13 to 91.…”
