Durability of vitreous enamel coatings and their resistance to abrasion, chemicals, and corrosion: a review

Abstract: Vitreous enamels represent a class of coatings with different technological properties, mainly appreciated for the protection they guarantee to the covered substrates. This review introduces enamel coatings, describing their production technologies and presenting the main properties affecting the enamel’s durability. Firstly, this review article introduces the most important studies regarding the improvement in abrasion resistance, highlighting both successes and failures. Afterward, the work reveals an outloo… Show more

“…A glassforming component, silica (SiO 2 ) or borate (B 2 O 3 ), is the major constituent of the frit, forming two distinct glass, silica-based and borate-based series. Other oxides are usually added, e.g., Na 2 O, K 2 O, and Li 2 Om, to control melting temperature of the frit (Rossi et al, 2021). Enamels are effective as high-temperature lubricants during hot forging.…”

“…Before the formulation of enamel, the frit must be suitably grounded in ball or drum mills. There are mainly two different types of milling: the dry and wet methods [34]. In the first case, the grinding takes place in the absence of water, and the charge is usually composed only of the frit, any pigments, and additives for special applications.…”

“…Enamels commonly show a high resistance to chemical agents, but their degree of resistance largely depends on the application purpose for which they are formulated. In general, it is possible to state that enamels are resistant to most solvents, acid, and neutral solutions, while they are easily attacked by solutions containing fluorides and strong alkaline boiling solutions (pH > 12) [34]. Their resistance to solvents makes them suitable to be used in environments where cleaning with aggressive detergents is carried out frequently, such as in road signs and architectural panels in stations and subways.…”

“…Many studies in literature regard the deposition of cataphoretic coatings on many different substrates, such as aluminum alloys 15–20 and Zn–Mn alloys, 21 with the application of different pretreatments 22 . Finally, reinforcing filler based on ceria‐titania nanoparticles 23 and functionalized graphene oxide flakes 24–27 have been added to cataphoretic baths to improve the protective properties of the polymeric matrix.…”
