In this study, the characteristics of the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) expansion of steel slag itself, mortar bars, and concrete specimens using steel slag as aggregate are individually investigated by the expansion test method, to determine if steel slag aggregate in concrete can provide volume stability. The results show that when steel slag is aged in water for one month, its self-expansibility is below the permitted limit of 1.5% according to the JIS A 5015 standard. The ASR test results show that the ASR expansion of the mortar bars continuously increased with the increase in the test period. However, all mortar bars were below the permitted limit of 0.1% after 14 days according to the ASTM C 1260 standard. In contrast, the ASR expansion of concrete specimens was above the criteria prescribed by the ASTM C 1293 standard. From the results, the expansion of concrete specimens could not be controlled within the permitted limit by the ASTM 1293 criteria, even if the expansivity of steel slag did not exceed the criteria. Meanwhile, considering the crack propagation patterns of the concrete specimens, the cracks due to ASR expansion developed and connected even when the expansion was below the permitted limit. Besides, when mineral admixtures were used as the binder in the concrete specimens, there were discrepancies in the results between the expansion rate and the crack properties, such as maximum length and total crack length. Therefore, to accurately determine the change in volume due to ASR expansion in concrete using steel slag as coarse aggregate, it is necessary to check the crack patterns in addition to evaluating the expansion rate.

En la actualidad, el interés por usar materiales de desecho y subproductos provenientes del hormigón ha incrementado, debido a la necesidad de minimizar la contaminación en el planeta. El presente documento tiene como objetivo la revisión sistemática de la literatura con respecto a la implementación de los residuos de acero en la mezcla de hormigón, y cómo esto influye en su comportamiento físico-mecánico. Se ha enfocado el interés principalmente en los residuos de acero en forma de escoria, limadura, viruta y fibras, incorporados en todo tipo de hormigón estructural, utilizado en columnas, vigas, zapatas, losas y muros. El uso de estos materiales tiene un alto impacto, pues no solo ayuda a reducir el costo de fabricación de cemento y hormigón, sino que a la vez otorga numerosos beneficios ecológicos, como reducir el costo de los vertederos, ahorrar energía y proteger el medio ambiente de una posible contaminación. Se efectuó la búsqueda de artículos indexados en las diversas bases de datos, tales como ASCE, EBSCO, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Scopus y SpringerOpen; se seleccionó finalmente un total de 60 artículos publicados desde el año 2014. Se concluye que el uso de residuos de acero es una alternativa para incorporar a la mezcla de hormigón, pues puede reemplazar parcial o totalmente al agregado y lograr la producción de hormigones que no presenten afección en sus propiedades físico-mecánicas; e incluso, en algunos casos, mejorar dichas características.

The recent emphasis on sustainable development in the construction industry has made it essential to develop construction and building materials that are not only affordable, but have minimal negative impact on the environment. This study investigates the valorisation of steel slag, which is mostly considered to be a waste material in several parts of the world, by blending with calcined impure kaolinitic clay to partially replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in the preparation of self-compacting concrete (SCC). OPC was substituted with steel slag at a constant level of 10%, whereas calcined clay replaced OPC at varying levels, ranging from 10 to 30% in a ternary blended mix. The hardened properties evaluated include compressive and flexural strengths. Samples containing only calcined clay showed a lower fluidity, which was significantly improved when steel slag was added to the mix. SCC containing 10% steel slag and 20% calcined clay obtained 28 days compressive strength, which was 3.6% higher than the reference cement concrete. An XRD analysis revealed a significant decrease in the peak heights of portlandite in mixtures containing steel slag and calcined clay, regardless of their replacement percentage. Generally, all the blended cement samples performed appreciably in resisting sulphate attack. The results of this study demonstrate that using steel slag and calcined clay together can significantly improve the fresh and hardened properties of SCC without compromising its mechanical properties.
