Durability of Results Obtained with Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy in the Treatment of Men with Symptomatic Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Abstract: To assess the durability of the results of transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) for symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), we have reviewed publications describing trials with at least 3 years of follow-up. For men treated only by TUMT, improvement in symptoms and quality of life appears to be maintained for at least 4 to 5 years. Improvement in peak flow rates is modest but is generally maintained, particularly after higher-energy therapies. These results represent responders, and a crucial q… Show more

“…Studies of alpha-blockers are generally less than two years [5,9,6]. Studies of interventions like transurethral microwave thermotherapy may have longer follow up of between three and seven years, but the bulk of the information is from nonblinded, uncontrolled studies [10], and in surgical studies men generally have higher initial symptom scores and lower maximum urinary flow rates than is seen in medical interventions.…”

“…HE-TUMT re-treatment rates range from 19% to 26% within 3 to 4 years [29,30,39], while TURP rates were 4.7% to 12.9%. CoreTherm data presented at the European Association of Urology in Madrid in 2003 showed re-treatment rates of 12% to 20% over 3 years, compared with 5.7% for TURP.…”
