El número de obras de construcción, remodelación y demolición en las ciudades colombianas aumenta de manera constante como consecuencia del crecimiento y desarrollo socioeconómico de la población urbana. Sin embargo, estas prácticas generan grandes volúme-nes de residuos que en la actualidad se han convertido en un problema de contaminación ambiental en ciudades como Cali (Colombia). La búsqueda de soluciones integrales que permitan un adecuado manejo, gestión y aprovechamiento de los diferentes materiales que componen los residuos de la construcción y demolición (RC&D) era impensable hace algunas dé-cadas. No obstante, hoy día es un desafío apremiante para los diferentes sectores de la sociedad que deben encaminar esfuerzos para encontrar soluciones. En este sentido, este artículo de revisión presenta un aná-lisis sobre la situación actual alrededor de este tema en la ciudad mencionada y propone la generación de acciones de acuerdo con las oportunidades y retos necesarios para alcanzar una gestión total de los RC&D. El análisis de esta problemática podría ayudar a orientar futuras investigaciones sobre el tema, además de promover su prioridad en la agenda pública, generando así las condiciones necesarias para que la actividad del reciclaje de los RC&D se convierta en una posibilidad viable en las ciudades colombianas a partir de la experiencia obtenida. Fire Behavior of U-shaped Steel Beams Filled with Demolished Concrete Lumps and Fresh Concrete

Abstract:To reuse waste concrete in a more straightforward and simplified way, a new kind of structural member containing fresh concrete (FC) and demolished concrete lumps (DCLs) distinctly larger than conventional recycled aggregates has been proposed. Previous research has shown that, at room temperature, the mechanical performance of the U-shaped steel beams filled with DCLs and FC is similar to that of the U-shaped steel beams filled with FC alone. This research explores the fire behavior of the U-shaped steel beams filled with DCLs and FC. Five specimens including three beams filled with DCLs and FC and two reference beams filled with FC alone were tested in fire. The experimental parameters included the replacement ratio of DCLs, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, the load ratio, and the thickness of fire insulation. Based on the test results, numerical models in which the thermal resistance at the interface between the U-shaped steel and the in-filled concrete is considered are developed using SAFIR to determine the thermal and structural responses of the specimens. Lastly, parametric studies are carried out preliminarily to investigate the effects of some parameters on the fire resistance of such beams. It is found that the replacement ratio of DCLs within a range of 0% to 33% has a very limited effect on the temperature distribution, structural response, and fire resistance of the specimens, that embedding longitudinal reinforcements can significantly increase the fire resistance of such beams, that the interface thermal resistance can generate a temperature drop of up to 280 • C at the interface between the U-shaped steel and the in-filled concrete, and that the numerical models are capable of predicting the thermal and structural responses of such beams.

The effect of the coarse aggregate type on the fatigue flexural behavior of concrete was investigated in this work. Three types of the coarse aggregates were selected from three different careers (CA1, CA2 and CA3). The mechanical parameters of these aggregates were determined (Los Anglos and Micro Deval). Prismatic specimens (70×70×280 mm) for each concrete mixture were made with aggregates of each source. The flexural fatigue tests were conducted on these concrete samples with varying levels of loading of 55 to 80% and the ultimate flexural strength. The test frequency is around 80 Hz and it is automatically determined by pulsing the fatigue machine for a resonance situation (the phase shift is δ=0) between the mass-spring-specimen system. The obtained results show that the aggregates which have the similar parameters (Micro Deval and LA), provide better adhesion with cement paste, and therefore a greater bending strength. The strength evolution at short-term age is typical for specimens based on aggregates with low wear resistance by triturate (a high Micro Deval coefficient). Regarding the fatigue flexural behavior, the concrete specimens based on CA1, which have similar coefficients of Los Angeles and Micro Deval (respectively 18 and 16) present the behavior (load/cycle numbers) close to that of the model prototype of the Wöhler curve. This can be explained by a high homogeneity of the charge distribution during fatigue test compared to other concrete mixtures. Also, it was noted that the relationship between the endurance limit and the coefficient of Los Angeles is inversely proportional: The aggregates which have good strength to fragmentation (low coefficient of LA), as aggregates CA2 case give an endurance limit at around 70% max bending load.
