Duodenal Obstruction Secondary to Date Stone Impaction

Abstract: The use of non-invasive imaging techniques to rapidly establish diagnosis has always been an attempt in emergency situations. Recent significant advances in imaging technology have changed approach and algorithm of many emergencies. We present a case of swallowed date stone resulting in duodenal obstruction in a 10-year old child. Following the suspicion of a foreign body impaction which caused symptoms of acute intestinal obstruction, the case was diagnosed precisely by conventional sonography. This spared th… Show more

“…In addition, dates are also added to porridge or dessert. The date stone is prone to pierce the intestinal wall due to its sharp and elongated shape, and has also reported to lodge in the oesophagus (9) and duodenum (10). To our knowledge, however, this is the first report of 13cases of intestinal perforation caused by date stone ingestion.…”

“…A history of foreign body ingestion, especially in children, mentally impaired and old patients, is important 5 . Common predisposing factors are previous gastric surgery, psychiatric illness, coeliac disease and metabolic disorders such as uraemia 6 . Rarely, bezoars can cause serious problems due to complications such as perforation 7 .…”

“…While gastric bezoars are rare, and usually observed in female children with mental or emotional disorders [ 3 ], other parts of the GI tract may be affected. Recent significant advances in imaging technology have changed the approach and algorithm of management of many bezoar emergencies [ 4 ], but successful management is usually achieved by endoscopy and surgery. Here we present a rare case of lactobezoars and the role of endoscopy, laparoscopy and surgery in the management.…”
