Duodenal involvement in Schistosoma mansoni infection.

Abstract: SUMMARY Intestinal involvement in Schistosoma mansoni infection is usually confined to the ileum and colon. Duodenal infestation was diagnosed in a patient with recurrent schistosomiasis despite treatment who presented with a postoperative small bowel fistula. Duodenal schistosomiasis can be suspected on endoscopy, but must always be confirmed by biopsy. After penetrating the skin all schistosome species migrate to the portal system, where for unknown reasons, they distribute to different sites. Thus S jajponic… Show more

“…Eggs were purified from digested sections of liver or ileum of infected animals as previously described. 42 Quantitative real-time RT-PCR Total murine RNA was reverse transcribed by Transcriptor First Strand cDNA Synthesis Kit (Roche) according to manufacturer's instructions. Real-time PCR was performed with LightCycler® 480 SYBR Green I Master mix in LightCycler® 480 II (Roche).…”

“…In our case, no parasites or eggs were detected in the biopsies of the mucosa suggesting a low worm burden. Intestinal involvement in S. mansoni infection is usually confined to the ileum and colon, but duodenal involvement has also been reported [ 24 ]. In the early stage of the disease, the colonoscopy can range from normal mucosa to edematous, congestive mucosa, petechial hemorrhage or even frank ulcerations.…”

“…Fibrotic strictures [57], fistulas [58,59], bowel perforation [60][61][62], and other consequences of chronic bowel inflammation in schistosomiasis have been reported [63,64] but are less common than polyposis. These disease manifestations usually require surgical treatment, obviously in concert with antischistosomal chemotherapy.…”
