Dufourmentel Rhomboid Flap for Sacrococcygeal Pilonidal Sinus: Technical Details

Abstract: SUMMARY:Sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPD) is a chronic an uncommon entity with a variety of alternatives for treatment. One of those is the excision of the sinus tract followed by a reconstruction with the rhomboid flap described by Dufourmentel. The aim of this paper is to describe the main phases of the technique. A detailed explanation of the key steps for the implementation of Dufourmentel flap for the treatment of SPD is exposed. Excision of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus followed by Dufourmentel rho… Show more

“…The Limberg Rhomboid flap has been used successfully in repairing the cutaneous defects due to malignancy, bed sores, pilonidal sinus and traumatic ulcers as evidenced by past studies. [4][5][6][7][8] In our study as well we have used rhomboid flap for similar cases. We have used rhomboid flap to cover the cutaneous defect by creating a similar shaped flap of equal size by mobilizing the lax skin of same texture and skin color.…”

“…In our study the complications were present in 8 (15.7%) cases which is higher than the study done by Alvarez et al where they had only 8% complication rate. 5 It can be explained on the basis of the patient selection, as 84% of the cases in their study were due to malignancy i.e. less numbers of bedsores and infected cases like pilonidal sinus.…”

“…1,2 It is a common anorectal problem most often arising in the hair follicles within the natal cleft of the sacrococcygeal region. [3][4][5] Patients may present with symptoms of acute disease (pain in the sacrococcygeal region due to abscess formation) or may suffer from the chronic form of the disease with purulent discharge from one or multiple sinus tracts. 6 The treatment of pilonidal sinus disease remains controversial.…”
