Ducted whistlers propagating in higher‐order guided mode and recorded on board of Compass‐2 satellite by the advanced Signal Analyzer and Sampler 2

Abstract: The advanced electromagnetic wave detector and analyzer, Signal Analyzer and Sampler 2, successfully operated on board of Compass‐2 satellite (launched May 2006). One of the peculiarities of this experiment was that the efficient sensitivities of both electric and magnetic channels were very close to being identical. Between the interesting events detected we found the evidence of whistler mode signals propagating in higher‐ (third‐) order guided mode, most probable between two layers (i.e., “onionskin” struct… Show more

“…A továbbfejlesztett SAS-2-K2-es 2006-ban a Kompasz-2 orosz-magyar-ukrán műhold fedélzetén repült, és a magyar mérésekkel sikerült először igazolni az ún. vezetett terjedést whistlerek esetében műholdas adatokból (Ferencz et al 2009). 2012-ben sikerrel állt pályára a Csibisz-M orosz-magyar-ukrán műhold a Progressz teherűrhajó segítségével, fedélzetén a SAS-3-Ch műszerrel.…”

“…The core instrument of the EVE EM suite is a combined electromagnetic wave analyser and permittivity sensor. The electromagnetic wave analyser is based on a Hungarian instrument with extensive flight heritage on Compass-2, Chibis and Relec satellites and the ISS [14]. This instrument measures the horizontal electric field from 0-20 kHz by measuring the potential between two electrodes deployed on 1 m booms on opposite sides of the gondola.…”

“…In the last years, however, with the exclusion of the motion of the medium traversed by the propagating signals, it was possible to derive precise full‐wave solutions of monochromatic and UWB signals from the Maxwell's equations [ Ferencz et al , 1996, 2001; Ferencz , 2005] with a lot of successful applications of these theoretical results mainly in space research [e.g., Ferencz et al , 2001, 2007; Lichtenberger , 2009; Ferencz et al , 2009]. The key step to derive these new solutions was the correct application of the method of inhomogeneous basic modes (MIBM) (see details given by Ferencz [1978c], Ferencz et al [2001], Ferencz [2004], and Ferencz [2005]).…”
