This paper explores three topics that constantly challenge geotechnical engineers: deformation, water and safety.More speciically, these topics involve understanding and predicting deformation, designing safely when water pressure is dominant, and, more generally, trying to manage the many uncertainties we face in a rational manner that can be agreed and communicated to others. Evolving understanding of the secrets coded in the ground have led to developments in computercodes for ground deformation and codes of practice for geotechnical design.Using the author’s own career as a background, the paper considers the development of ideas related to these topics over thepast forty years. This is not a monotonic process: ideas and understand from one project may lie dormant for some years andthen be developed when a fresh need arises at a later stage. Equally important are the colleagues and mentors with whom problems can be addressed and ideas discussed; some outstanding individuals will be acknowledged.

Summary The stratigraphy, geomorphological evolution and physical and chemical properties of the various geological units forming the foundations to the £232 million Dubai Dry Dock are presented. The investigations confirm the existence of weaker, silty gypsiferous palaeosabkha and lagoonal deposits within the more typical Miliolite Sandstone, a cemented aeolian carbonate sandstone of Pleistocene age. The distribution and engineering significance of the weaker, gypsiferous layers are described in relation to the construction of the dock floor and settlement of a few caissons adjacent to the sea.

Maximum working loads in the existing grand assembly area at Drydocks World – Dubai have been increased following three-dimensional finite-element analysis of the large ground-bearing slab and underlying carbonate sand. To obtain good calibration data, precise monitoring of the slab was undertaken during live launch operations using automated total station and precise levelling techniques. The uncertainty in these measurements was much improved at night in the absence of solar radiation and heat shimmer effects. The monitoring data revealed a higher stiffness of the carbonate sands than expected, which was the main reason for allowing working loads to be increased. It is recommended that more research be undertaken into the engineering properties of the calcareous soils of this region in order to develop more efficient geotechnical designs.
