Duality for symmetric second rank tensors: The massive case

Abstract: A generalization of duality transformations for arbitrary Lorentz tensors is presented, and a systematic scheme for constructing the dual descriptions is developed. The method, a purely Lagrangian approach, is based on a first order parent Lagrangian, from which the dual partners are generated. In particular, a family of theories which are dual to the massive spin two Fierz-Pauli field hµν , both free and coupled to an external source, is constructed in terms of a T (µν)σ tensor.

“…It has the form of a Lagrangian in our multiparametric family, but with h µν without a definite symmetry, instead of the symmetric one chosen in [16,17]. When T α [µν] is eliminated from this first order Lagrangian, the antisymmetric part of h µν decouples and becomes irrelevant, so that we obtain the usual massive Fierz-Pauli theory.…”

“…This is exhibited as a simple example of the ambiguities in the dual theory introduced by constructing the parent Lagrangian with arbitrary coefficients, restricted only by the condition that after eliminating the field ω α[βγ] the standard FP theory is recovered, as it is done in refs. [16,17]. Nevertheless, given that we arrive at the condition a = 0 only after a very particular gauge fixing and field elimination via equations of motion, we take this as an indication that these two generally non-commuting and non-unique processes will also introduce ambiguities in the final Zinoviev Lagrangian containing only the dual propagating field.…”
