Dual time point imaging fluorine-18 flourodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography for evaluation of large loco-regional recurrences of breast cancer treated with electrochemotherapy

Abstract: BackgroundElectrochemotherapy is a local anticancer treatment very efficient for treatment of small cutaneous metastases. The method is now being investigated for large cutaneous recurrences of breast cancer that are often confluent masses of malignant tumour with various degrees of inflammation. To this end 18-Flourine-Flourodeoxyglucose-Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (FDG-PET/CT) could be a method for response evaluation. However, a standard FDG-PET/CT scan cannot differentiate inflammatory… Show more

“…24,54,55 Several studies have investigated the applicability of DTPI for improvement of the results from FDG-PET/CT for diagnosis, assessment of axillary lymph nodes, and recurrence of breast cancer. 24,25,[56][57][58][59] Mavi and colleagues 24 in a study of 152 patients with DTPI observed an increase in the uptake of FDG at the second time point in patients with malignant breast lesions. They also noted differences in the increase of FDG uptake, which might reflect the tumor biology.…”

“…The PET/CT scan was performed as a triple time‐point‐scan at 60, 90, and 120 minutes after injections of 18‐fluorine FDG. This method was chosen to investigate whether it was possible to clearly visualize the tumor area without disturbance from general inflammation . Increase in standardized uptake values (SUVpeak) from 60 to 90 and from 60 to 120 minutes was interpreted as non‐inflammation.…”
