Dual‐Responsive Supramolecular Hydrogels from Water‐Soluble PEG‐Grafted Copolymers and Cyclodextrin

Abstract: Novel temperature and pH dual-responsive hydrogels were constructed by inclusion of poly(PEGMA)-co-poly(DMA) with alpha-cyclodextrin in aqueous solution. The temperature- or pH-induced sol/gel transition in the hydrogels was completely reversible. Studies on structure/property relationships show that chain uniformity, graft density and copolymer concentration affect the hydrogel behavior. A dual-responsive mechanism is proposed. The in vitro release of a model drug from this hydrogel was studied. It was found … Show more

“…This kind of hydrogels could be prepared in mild conditions with the advantages of easy formulation, free of any organic solvents, avoidance of chemical reactions and so on. Moreover, such hydrogels also show thixotropy property and could be used as injectable drug or cell carriers [13][14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…In a work of Chen's, the temperature and pH dual-responsive hydrogels were constructed by molecular brushes directly [77]. The molecular brushes poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate]-co-poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PPEGMA-co-PDMA) were obtained by grafting PEG chains onto the backbone of PDMA.…”

“…The complexation between the host and guest molecules via non‐covalent inclusion can induce cross‐linking between the two polymer chains ( Figure 1 A). Another method includes conjugation of guest molecules onto a polymer chain which is then reacted with macrocyclic host molecules to achieve inclusion complexation (Figure B) . Finally, supramolecular hydrogels have also been developed via direct complexation of host and guest molecules after chemical modification of either host or guest or both host and guest molecules (Figure C) …”
