Dual-Polarized IRSs in Uplink MIMO-NOMA Networks: An Interference Mitigation Approach

Abstract: In this work, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are optimized to manipulate signal polarization and improve the uplink performance of a dual-polarized multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network. By multiplexing subsets of users in the polarization domain, we propose a strategy for reducing the interference load observed in the successive interference cancellation (SIC) process. To this end, dual-polarized IRSs are programmed to mitigate interference impinging at the… Show more

“…Hybrid beamforming strategies for dual-polarized millimeterwave MIMO systems were proposed in [27] and [28]. The work in [29] investigated the performance of a massive MIMO system with distributed polarized antennas, and dualpolarized MIMO systems assisted by intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) were considered in [5], [6], and [30].…”

“…Furthermore, even though dual-polarized MIMO systems with different MA techniques have been investigated in recent works, this paper is the first in the literature to propose a dual-polarized MIMO-RSMA network and study ways to mitigate interference issues of SIC via the polarization domain. Only [5] and [6] have harnessed the features of wave polarization to alleviate SIC issues. However, these works studied dual-polarized MIMO-NOMA schemes assisted by IRSs, which are system models fundamentally different from the one proposed in this paper.…”

“…Thus, the conventional independent and identically distributed assumption cannot be directly adopted to model co-/cross-polarized channels [21]. However, in most of the existing literature, the power of co-polarized channels is assumed to be equal [22], [23], [26], which is not efficient. Therefore, a realistic channel model including polarization is required.…”
