Dual Mobility Cups as the Routine Choice in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract: Background and Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is considered the most successful surgical procedure in orthopedics. However, dislocation remains the main indication for surgical revision. New designs of dual mobility cups (DMC) have lowered the classical complications and have extended the indications of DMC in elective surgeries. Our aim is to assess the trend of DMC indications in THA as well as the incidence of their dislocation. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients under… Show more

“…We found that DMC was used more frequently in revision surgery for instability in patients slightly older than those receiving a standard cup, [ 17 , 21 , 22 ], confirming the findings of Mohaddes et al which showed an average age of 75 years for DMC implants, and 73 years for standard cup. Viste et al [ 23 ], in a retrospective study of DMC use in hip revision surgery in 383 patients, reported a mean age at surgery of 78 years.…”

“…In the opinion of certain researchers, the optimal head size was 28 mm. 4,54,55 Aguado-Maestro et al 56 reported a substantial rise in the risk of dislocation associated with a 22 mm head diameter compared to a 28 mm head diameter.…”

“…Based on previously published data, DMC demonstrated greater efficacy compared to other implants in patients who underwent THA. In addition, a study found that the dual mobility group had a significantly lower rate of dislocation than the conventional group (1.5% vs. 6.7%) [ 13 ]. Moreover, in another study consisting of 28 patients with ochronotic arthropathy, the DMC provided excellent stability and a low rate of dislocation, with no instances of component revision or dislocation.…”
