Dual mobility cup in hip arthroplasty: An in‐depth analysis of joint registries

Abstract: Although total hip arthroplasty (THA) has shown successful results, instability remains a major complication. In recent years, dual mobility cups (DMC) have gained interest among clinicians thanks to its low rate of dislocation and good clinical results. The main aim of this work was to describe the accuracy of data on DMC from national and regional joint registries (JRs) and the available worldwide literature. We identified topics on DMC among JRs to propose a new harmonized and standardized section for DMC w… Show more

“…While DM implants became a common, accepted choice in France, widespread international adoption was much slower 4 . DM implants have only been approved for use in the U.S. for a little over a decade, with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance of the Stryker Monoblock Anatomic DM (Stryker) in 2009 and clearance of the Stryker Modular DM in 2011 5 .…”

“…Dual-mobility implants have been used in Europe for many years with successful outcomes; however, it has been only approved in the United States since 2009 [18]. The American Joint Replacement Registry data show a continuous increase in the use of dual-mobility-bearing THA for primary and revision hip arthroplasty procedures [19,20]. From 2012 to 2019, the usage of dualmobility bearing for primary hip arthroplasties increased from 4.1% to 8.6% and from 14% to 22.3% for revision hip arthroplasties [20].…”

“…Work on all of these factors (combined titanium and hydroxyapatite coating, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), chamfers in the third articulation, preimpacted femoral head and thin polished round neck) led to the introduction of second-generation DMCs in the late 1990s, with improved survival and almost eliminated IPDs [16][17][18]. Due to improved results, its use is increasingly widespread, especially in France, its native country (39.3% in primary surgery, 87.9% in revision surgery in 2018) [19,20].…”

“…On the other hand, some teams and countries are still hesitant, they reserve it for particular indications and look for more robust results to extend their indications [20,21].…”
