Abstract: In this letter we aim to provide the first in-depth study of a multiband hologram filter response under the influence of gain. We find that these aperiodic DFB gratings, which are essentially computer optimized digital holograms, can be inversedesigned to possess multiple defect-like modes analogous to those present in quarter-wave phase shifted gratings. Aperiodic lattices are a promising route to achieving tunable or multi-frequency lasing, but their threshold spectrum remains largely unstudied. We find that holographically designed aperiodic lattices can possess a multimode spectral response, containing both defect and band-edge photonic states. Under the influence of facet feedback the aperiodic lattice maintains remarkable spectral control at multiple frequencies over a wide bandwidth. This control arises from enhancement to the photon density of states at the designed frequencies, reducing the threshold of modes in the Fabry Perot coupled aperiodic lattice laser. Our results suggest that aperiodic lattice lasers are robust against fabrication imperfections, as exemplified by experimental demonstrations in prior work.

Dual-wavelength switchable emission has been demonstrated in InGaN quantum dot (QD) micro-cavity light-emitting diodes (MCLEDs). By simply modulating the injected current levels, the output of the device can be dynamically tuned between the two distinct cavity modes at 498.5 and 541.7 nm, exhibiting deterministic mode switching in the green spectral range. Owing to the microcavity effect, high spectral purity with a narrow linewidth of 0.21 nm was obtained. According to the experimental and theoretical results, it can be concluded that the dual-wavelength switching for the investigated MCLEDs is ascribed to the broad and tunable gain of a thin InGaN QD active region, together with the mode selection and enhancement effect of the cavity. To provide additional guidelines for controllable dual-wavelength switchable operation in nitride-based light-emitting devices, detailed design and fabrication strategies are discussed. This work presents an effective method to achieve mode switching for practical applications such as multi-wavelength optical recording, frequency mixing, flip-flop and optical switches.

By incorporating a holographically designed aperiodic photonic lattice within one of the arms of a Y-coupled Fabry–Perot quantum cascade laser architecture, it has been demonstrated that the multiband mode control exerted by the photonic lattice on emission spectra can, owing to the mutual optical coupling between the arms, be transferred to the second unpatterned arm. However, the underlying theoretical mechanism on how the lattice influences the threshold gain spectral properties of the Y architecture has, until now, remained unstudied. Here, we use the transfer matrix formalism, originally developed for studying aperiodic lattice lasers, to investigate this. A detailed threshold gain spectral study revealed that although the effects of facet feedback of the Y-coupled laser chip are present, due to the enhanced photonic density-of-states at user-specified frequencies, the aperiodic lattice has remarkable control over the Y architecture laser spectra, under the mutual optical coupling between the arms. Finally, indicated by the fringe patterns akin to double-slit interference, of the measured far-field beam profiles, phase-locked terahertz emissions from the Y architecture are demonstrated.
