Dual energy CT angiography: pros and cons of dual-energy metal artifact reduction algorithm in patients after endovascular aortic repair

Abstract: DECT with MAR reduced artifacts from coils and improved endoleak visualization in 1/10 (10%) cases due to location adjacent to a coil. However, MAR impaired endoleak visualization in 6/10 (60%) cases and should be reviewed combined with 60 keV standard reconstructions and iodine MD images.

“…There was a specific reason why the lung‐sliding scores were classified by the percentage of the area that moved rather than by the distance of movement. Indeed, there was a report that measured the distance of lung‐sliding movement in chest US examinations of pleural adhesions in humans . However, unlike humans, dogs vary greatly in size depending on the breed, from small dogs such as chihuahuas to large dogs such as great Danes.…”

“…Due to a frequency of complications after EVAR, patients need a lifelong follow-up imaging which is undertaken every 1-3 months after the procedure and every 6-12 months if the aneurysm is stable or decreases in size [24]. As a result, to decrease the radiation dose to patients having surveillance scans, the number of acquisitions can be reduced [14].…”

“…No studies evaluated the value of metal artifact reduction (MAR) post-processing using DECT in patients after EVAR. Boos and colleagues [24] reported that the use of MAR impaired endoleak visualization in 60% of cases. However, when coils were present, DECT with metal artefact reduction techniques, reduced artifacts and improved endoleak detection in 10% of cases.…”
