Dual effects of erdosteine on hemostasis via its different metabolites in young rats

Abstract: Aim: In the study, we examined erdosteine’s effects on platelet functions and coagulation. Materials and methods: A total 29 young albino Wistar rats were divided into four groups. Control rats ( n = 6) were given saline; Group 1 rats ( n = 7) were given 3 mg/kg erdosteine by oral gavage for 3 days; Group 2 rats ( n = 7) were given 10 mg/kg erdosteine by oral gavage for 3 days; and Group 3 rats ( n = 9) were given 30 mg/kg erdosteine for 3 days. Twenty-four hours after the final dose, blood samples we… Show more

“…In rats, erdosteine prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), lowered the plasma levels of factors II, VII, VII, IX, and X, and reduced the antithrombin level [46]. However, at a dosage compatible with that used in humans, the platelet counts were not altered with erdosteine treatment [47], although in some experimental models, erdosteine decreased ischemia-reperfusion injury [48].…”

“…Arica's study showed that platelet aggregations were observed in the peripheral smears. 11 In our study, the difference in platelet counts was determined. There is no diversity between control and ED 10 mg/kg group.…”

“…Our previous studies performed on young rats demonstrated that different unknown coagulation mechanisms of ED were activated in a dose-dependant manner, affecting the hemostasis. 11 However, there is no information available concerning the effect of ED on hemostasis and coagulation in literature. However, there are literature data regarding abnormal hemostasis and coagulation in relation to the instability of the disulfide bond with N -acetylcysteine protein in people.…”
