Dual Coordination between Stereochemistry and Cations Endows Polyethylene Terephthalate Fabrics with Diversiform Antimicrobial Abilities for Attack and Defense

Abstract: Modification of fabrics by stereochemical antiadhesion strategies is an emerging approach to antimicrobial fabric finishing. However, a purely antiadhesive fabric cannot avoid the passive adhesion of pathogenic microorganisms. To address this issue, borneol 4formylbenzoate (BF) with a stereochemical structure is introduced into a cationic polymer PEI-modified PET fabric by a simple two-step method. The obtained fabric exhibits remarkable features of high bactericidal activity, excellent resistance to bacterial… Show more

“…Fabrics are widely used in a variety of environments where the attachment of microbial pathogens can pose a potential threat to human health. Several types of antimicrobial agents, including metallic particles, have been approved for use on fabrics, but there are cases where the antimicrobial ability weakens and disappears over time. In comparison to the addition of easily leached antimicrobial agents, composites with excellent antimicrobial properties can be achieved by introducing antimicrobial functional groups, such as the quaternary ammonium group, into polymer molecules during the synthesis of polymeric quaternary ammonium antimicrobial polymers. The presence of a dense and uniform distribution of E. coli colonies and S.…”

“…Prison break experiment: A "sandwich structure" was used to observe the inhibition of bacterial growth by the materials [29,31]. 2 µL suspension of pre-prepared Bacillus subtilis Coatings 2024, 14, 381 4 of 9 (B. subtilis) (10 6 CFU/mL) was dropped on the top "TSA island" and then incubated at 37 • C. Changes in the plate were recorded every 24 h using a digital camera.…”

“…Cationic groups, which serve as the driving force for the electrostatic interactions between the SCPs and the bacterial cell membrane, are particularly crucial to dictate both antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of SCPs. Quaternary ammonium cations (QACs) in diverse forms , are the most commonly used cationic groups in antimicrobial SCPs. , Although QACs were believed to be impervious to resistance, their extensive use as antibacterial agents over the past decades has indeed resulted in the development of drug resistance in certain bacteria. , This has motivated the exploration of other cations for antimicrobial applications. In addition to QACs, phosphonium and sulfonium have emerged as two alternative cationic groups for the development of antibacterial polymers.…”
