Dual-Band MIMO Antenna for 5G/WLAN Mobile Terminals

Abstract: This paper presents a dual-band four-element multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) array for the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication. The proposed antenna is composed of an open-loop ring resonator feeding element and a T-shaped radiating element. The utilization of the open-loop ring resonator not only reduces the size of the antenna element, but also provides positive cross-coupling. The dimension of a single antenna element is 14.9 mm × 7 mm (0.27λ × 0.13λ, where λ is the wavelength of 5.5 GHz). The … Show more

“…A novel slot-array DGS for decoupling microstrip antenna array is proposed in [26], where the highest isolation is achieved by applying the slot-array DGS when the edge-to-edge spacing between circularly polarized (CP) antenna elements is 0.057 wavelength. In addition, dual-band MIMO antennas with high isolation have been recently reported for 5G/WLAN smartphone applications [27].…”

“…However, with the limited internal space of the universal smartphones, the number of antenna elements will be influenced. In order to solve this problem, each antenna element should be minimized [1][2][3][4], and operate at dual-band [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] or broadband [13][14][15][16][17]. By sharing a common grounding branch for the two adjacent antenna elements, a compact self-decoupled antenna pair was obtained in [1][2][3].…”

“…By using a multi-slot decoupling technique, a dual-band eight-element antenna array is proposed in [5,12]. A single antenna element consisting of two radiators was presented for dual-band operation [6]. A folded monopole and a gap-coupled loop branch were combined together to obtain two broad bands [7].…”

“…However, this will inevitably lead to a large occupied area. Within the occupied area, many methods to minimize mutual coupling have been proposed, such as the employment of band gap structures [5], decoupling networks [6,7], neutralization lines [8], defected ground structures [9] and parasitic elements [10]. These technologies reduce the coupling by minimizing, attenuating and blocking the surface currents [11].…”
