This paper explains the design and development of an electrically small (ka = 0.59) circularly polarized (CP) antenna based on vialess composite right/left‐handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) and third‐iterative fractals (TIF) applicable for 1.637 GHz L‐band mobile satellite applications. The idea behind the CP antenna originates from the combination of curved meander line inductor on the top side of the substrate back coupled with TIF in backside of the substrate. The loading of TIF provides an increased level of cross polarization by adjusting the dimensions of TIF which is almost equal to the main polarization level of original CRLH‐TL loaded antenna on the top side of the substrate. Due to this, the antenna can generate two orthogonally polarized modes for supporting CP radiation with excellent miniaturization and improved gain. The overall dimensions of the proposed antenna are 22 × 27 × 1.27 mm with radiating element size including the ground plane are 0.11λ0 × 0.14λ0 × 0.006λ0 at 1.635 GHz. The proposed antenna can provide excellent miniaturization of 68.51% compared with the conventional monopole antenna with improved radiation performance. The antenna provides an acceptable impedance bandwidth of 0.73%, improved gain of 1.79 dBi without using complex vias, excellent miniaturization, and low profile (0.006 λ0) compared to existing similar type of antennas in the literature.

A dual‐band dual‐mode microstrip Yagi antenna with quasi‐end‐fire radiation patterns is proposed in this paper. It consists of five radiating patches driven by a single slot‐loaded patch placed in the middle. Meanwhile, two slot‐loaded parasitic patches are symmetrically located on two sides of the driven patch, respectively. In the lower band, the five patches involved resonate at TM01 mode. While in the upper band, all the patches resonate at TM02 mode. In order to ensure quasi‐end‐fire radiations in the both bands, four slots are symmetrically etched around the strongest surface currents of each patch resonating at TM02 mode. As a result, the resonant frequency of TM02 mode is decreased dramatically, while the resonant frequency of TM01 mode almost remains unchanged. With these arrangements, the separations between any two of the adjacent patches at their centers satisfy the requirements in design of the microstrip Yagi antenna in both bands, so as to realize the dual‐band dual‐mode microstrip Yagi antenna on a single‐layer substrate. Finally, an antenna prototype is fabricated and tested. The measured results reveal that the dual operating bands of 2.76~2.88 and 4.88~5.03 GHz for |S11| < −10 dB are satisfactorily achieved. Most importantly, the proposed antenna can indeed realize the quasi‐end‐fire radiation patterns in dual operating bands.

In this article, the design and implementation of a dual‐band circularly polarized (CP) microstrip line fed square slot antenna with compact size is proposed. The proposed CP antenna consists of a square slot antenna with a pair of symmetric rectangular extensions on opposite corners and loaded with an array of inclined and truncated rectangular copper strips. The square slot with diagonal extensions resonates at 2.24 to 2.62 GHz with a 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 15.7%. Besides, loading it with an array of inclined and truncated rectangular copper strips helps produce a resonance at higher band with CP. The higher band operates between 3.26 and 5.18 GHz and centered at 4.52 GHz, with a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 45.5%. The polarization sense and resonant frequency of the proposed antenna can be independently tuned depending on the position and dimensions of the slot and strips, respectively. The proposed antenna is fabricated and measured in terms of impedance bandwidth, axial ratio bandwidth, peak gain, and radiation efficiency. Good agreement between the simulations and measurements of the prototype is obtained.
