Dual‐band (5G millimeter‐wave and dedicated short‐range communication) stacked patch antenna for advanced telematics applications

Abstract: The designed and fabricated patch antenna covers both dedicated short‐range communication (DSRC) and Fifth Generation (5G) millimeter‐wave (mmW) bands for advanced telematics. The fabricated antenna has a small volume of 2.7λH × 2.6λH × 0.15λH, where λH is the air wavelength of the highest operating frequency. The antenna performances, such as S‐parameters, the realized gain at boresight (RG00), antenna radiation efficiency, and radiation patterns, are reported. The simulated results are in good agreement with… Show more

“…The proposed radiator also exhibits fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 68.06%, bandwidth dimension ratio (BDR) of 8429.26. The presented prototype's BDR rate is higher than [3–10, 13, 17, 18], which is calculated using the relation BDR=FBW%λlength×λwidth …”

“…From Table 3, we observed that the proposed radiator has following unique merits over other radiator's demonstrated in literature such as single side printing (no DGS used), single strip line feeding (no SIW, vias), low design complexity, miniaturised physical size, unidirectional radiation pattern, good BDR of 3429.26 and better FBW of 68.06% η=||S11WC2||S11FS21||S11FS2 Some of the salient features of the proposed single element and modified corporate feed array structures are enumerated below: The proposed antenna has low design complexity since it consists of single layer single side etching compared to [1–9, 11, 13, 18] and hence it is easy to construct an array configuration. The proposed printed antenna is 52, 63, 77 and 81% smaller in size than [3, 9, 11, 18], and modified corporate feed network is 33, 59 and 73% smaller in size than [10–12].…”

“…However, this structure generates surface wave and nonuniform current distribution. A dual band multilayered stacked patch is reported in Reference for short‐range communication (5.85‐5.925 GHz) and millimeter wave applications (27.5‐28.5 GHz), where both antennas' harmonic response are not investigated.…”
