Abstract. The University of Porto has a well-established set of specialized libraries serving the research and student population of its 14 schools. Thematic digital libraries can be valuable for organizing specific collections and for supporting emergent communities. This work focuses on two case studies, one in the area of the Fine Arts and the other in the area of Food and Nutrition. For building both digital libraries we propose to use the existing university repository infrastructure and to establish a metadata workflow that makes use of available descriptions in the library catalogues and in the university information system. We expect that such an approach, which takes into account the institutional context and resources, can be used in other collections at our university and inspire similar initiatives elsewhere.Keywords: metadata integration, institutional repositories, DSpace, digital libraries, description and cataloguing. Thematic Digital Libraries at the University of PortoThe University of Porto is the largest Portuguese university, serving a population of over 28,000 students and covering research areas that range from the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, architecture, economics and business studies to science, engineering, medicine, sports and law. The university currently has three information systems that handle bibliographic records. The online library catalogues, managed with the Aleph system, are used for cataloguing, acquisition, loan and administration. We build on earlier work concerning integration platforms and the extension of institutional repositories [3,4] and create specific procedures for metadata integration.

Abstract. Managing bibliographic data is a requirement for many researchers, and in the group setting within which the majority of research takes place, the managing and sharing of bibliographic data is an important facet of organizing the research work. Managing and sharing bibliographies has to balance different levels of shared access (public catalogs, closed research group bibliographies, and personal bibliographies), and the sharing platform should integrate as seamlessly as possible into diverse environments in terms of operating systems, document processing, and other information management tools. The ShaRef system presented in this paper has been designed to fill the gap between public libraries and personal bibliographies, and provides an open platform for sharing bibliographic data among user groups. Through its simple and flexible data model and system architecture, ShaRef adapts to many settings and requirements, and can be used to increase collaboration and information flow within groups.

This paper focuses on the multifaceted use of the OAI-PMH in a repository architecture designed to store digital assets at the Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and to make the stored assets available in a uniform way to various downstream applications. In the architecture, the MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration Language is used as the XML-based format to represent complex digital objects. Upon ingestion, these objects are stored in a multitude of autonomous OAI-PMH repositories. An OAI-PMH compliant Repository Index keeps track of the creation and location of all those repositories, whereas an Identifier Resolver keeps track of the location of individual objects. An OAI-PMH Federator is introduced as a single-point-of-access to downstream harvesters. It hides the complexity of the environment to those harvesters, and allows them to obtain transformations of stored objects. While the proposed architecture is described in the context of the LANL library, the paper will also touch on its more general applicability.
