DSD and CAD/CAM integration in the planning and execution of an oral rehabilitation procedure

Abstract: This article presents a clinical case involving the integrated application of CAD/CAM and DSD. DSD – Digital Smile Design – assists in obtaining a treatment plan adjusted to the patient’s facial features, achieving the best aesthetic potential. The integration between DSD and CAD/CAM allows for greater fidelity in respect to the original plan. A patient received a rehabilitation with veneers milled out of leucite-reinforced feldspathic ceramics, using the CAD/CAM system and a DSD-obtained digital wax-up. This … Show more

“…Dental ceramics are the main materials used for indirect restorations [1]. However, their application and method of confection has undergone several changes over the last 30 years [2]. Due to their fragility, the first ceramic crowns were applied to metals so that they could resist occlusal forces, which resulted in an artificial appearance of the restoration, limiting its use in areas of esthetic region [2].…”

“…However, their application and method of confection has undergone several changes over the last 30 years [2]. Due to their fragility, the first ceramic crowns were applied to metals so that they could resist occlusal forces, which resulted in an artificial appearance of the restoration, limiting its use in areas of esthetic region [2]. Also, around 70% of dental tissue needed to be removed to reach a minimum thickness of each material [3], and these restorations often suffered from chipping, fracture, or delamination of the veneer porcelain due to differences in their properties compared with the material used for infrastructure [4].…”

“…15 When there is an association between DSD and intraoral scanning for ceramic veneers with previous periodontal surgery, the chances of possible changes in the case are minimized. 3,16 Digital wax-up favors the reproduction of the DSD previously approved by the patient. 12 Therefore, the periodontist and the dental technician can easily interpret the dentist's initial plan and reproduce the proposed treatment.…”

“…The digital planning can also be enhanced by using a complete digital workflow with intraoral scanning and wax‐up, minimizing flaws, and distortions 15 . When there is an association between DSD and intraoral scanning for ceramic veneers with previous periodontal surgery, the chances of possible changes in the case are minimized 3,16 . Digital wax‐up favors the reproduction of the DSD previously approved by the patient 12 .…”
