Dry WEDM in Improving HS-WEDMed Surface Quality

Abstract: This paper studies the surface quality of mould steel with high-speed wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) method, which is conducted in gas to improve the accuracy of finish cut, and compares the surface quality in atmosphere and in emulsion dielectric. Experiment results showed that WEDM in atmosphere offers advantages such as better surface roughness and higher material removal rate. The relationship about winding speed and worktable feed on WEDMed surface quality in semi-finishing cut and finishing c… Show more

“…Experiments show that pulse as t i = 8µs and I i = 12 A is suitable for semi-finishing. And lower wire speed as V s =5.0 m.s -1 is desirable for obtaining better roughness and straightness [9]. In the following tests, roughing was all processed with t i = 32µs.…”

“…Authors have presented a new procedure as gas-liquid combined multiple cut, in which the roughing is processed in dielectric liquid, and semi-finishing is in liquid or gas, while the finishing is in gas. Attempts of this new procedure both in HS-WEDM and LS-WEDM have been made, and surface roughness was improved obvioursly [8,9].…”

“…A new procedure was presented (as Gas-liquid Combined Multiple Cut), in which roughing is processed in dielectric liquid, and semi-finishing is in liquid or gas, while finishing is in gas. Attempts of this new procedure both with HS-WEDM and LS-WEDM were made, and surface roughness was improved obviously [4,5]. The dry and near dry LS-WEDM roughing of workpiece with small thickness were investigated [6].…”

“…In 2009, Wang et al worked on multi-axis HS-WEDM system to improve productivity [12]. In the same year, Wang et al also used dry WEDM to improve HS-WEDM surface roughness [13]. Now, 40 mm 2 /min cutting speed and 2.5 mm 2 /min lt materials are then flushed away by a continuously flowing fluid.…”
