“…This is consistent with findings that women are more likely to report dry mouth than men. 101 Women may respond to oral discomfort caused by dry mouth by increasing self-care behaviors (e.g., toothbrushing), which could lead to improved self-reported oral health. 102 Another explanation is that low medication adherence is a proxy for low health literacy, 103 which may be associated with the belief that one's oral health is good as long as no symptoms are present.…”

“…On the other hand, the link between oral function and frailty could also be attributed to common risk factors associated with the decline of oral function and musculoskeletal dysfunction at old age . Furthermore, dry mouth affects oral health and impacts certain oral functions such as swallowing, subsequently affecting food selections leading to undernutrition . Nevertheless, none of the included studies assessed this pathway.…”

“…This indicates the importance of assessing the severity and distress of symptoms in clinical practice. Patients who are seriously bothered by dry mouth tend to change their food consumption behavior to ease their suffering 36 , which may lead to the risk of developing malnutrition. In clinical practice, nurses need to assess this problem in all patients with anticholinergic medication to prevent risk of altered food consumption, and should suggest treatment for dry mouth 37 .…”
