Dry mouth and denture plaque microflora in complete denture and palatal obturator prosthesis wearers

Abstract: It was concluded that palatal obturator prosthesis wearers with a dry mouth have greater colonisation by Candida spp. and Staphylococcus spp. than do complete denture wearers.

“…These results indicate that the MIC of AMPH‐B against C. albicans varies depending upon patients’ systemic conditions. Dry mouth occurs among medically compromised oral cancer patients undergoing surgical treatment, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy . In the present study, mixing liquid and gel moisturizers increased the size of the growth‐inhibitory zones to the same level as those of AMPH‐B at two concentrations (1.25 and 2.5 μg/ml).…”

“…These drugs, however, cause adverse side effects such as hyperhidrosis and dyspepsia, so that oral moisturizers are frequently required . In the present study, we focused on the antifungal effects of oral moisturizers to reduce the risk of C. albicans infection, which is common among dry mouth patients. One in vitro study reported that although oral moisturizers exerted an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus , no antifungal effect on C. albicans was observed .…”

“…A greater proportion of obturators exhibit bacterial and fungal colonisation than dentures, and these obturators are colonised by a larger number of different species than dentures. 14,15 Obturators fabricated from silicone attract greater microbial colonisation than those made from titanium. 6 Obturators can become superinfected as C. albicans and other microorganisms from the nose and mouth penetrate into the material and cause material degradation, as well as acting as a reservoir for microbes, leading to chronic local or even systemic infection and inflammation.…”

“…In addition, the prevalence of Candid a spp. and Staphylococcus spp., which are the causative bacteria of aspiration pneumonia, is significantly higher in dry mouth patients than in those without dry mouth . Therefore, proper response is fundamental for dry mouth patients to avoid the risk of systemic infection.…”
