Introduction Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative bacterium that can survive in different environments, including soil, plants, and animals. Moreover, it is the most opportunistic human pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised patients, and has been recognized as one of the five main pathogens in nosocomial infections. 1 Pseudomonas diseases are mainly seen in urinary tract infections (UTIs), burn wounds, and pulmonary infections such as cystic fibrosis (CF). Mortality rates in P. aeruginosa infections are up to 50% and 70% in patients with bacteremia and nosocomial pneumonia, respectively. 2 P. aeruginosa infections are diverse, because they have a multiplicity of resistance mechanisms and have developed different metabolic and nutritional pathways. 3 Of the resistance mechanisms to be noted is the formation of biofilms, which provide better protection against different antibiotics and body defense systems. 3 Additionally, low outer cell membrane permeability causes intrinsic resistance to antibiotics and increases the number of multi-drug resistance (MDR) strains in P. aeruginosa (resistance ≥3 antibiotic classes). 4-7 Moreover, the high expression of efflux pumps can rapidly expand antibiotic resistance as well. 8 This review discusses types of efflux pumps, the efflux pumps role in pathogenicity, the importance of efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs), diagnostic methods for their detection, and compounds derived from natural sources that reduce infections caused by MDR P. aeruginosa. Efflux Pumps and Their Importance in Antibiotic Resistance Since the discovery of bacterial efflux pumps in the 1980s, many of them have been characterized. 9 Efflux pumps are membrane proteins and participate in the extrusion of antibiotics and chemicals such as organic solvents, dyes, detergents, intermediate molecules in cellular communications, metabolic products, and biocides in prokaryote and eukaryote cells. 10 Substrates of note of the efflux pumps are oxazolidinones

The increase in the incidence of foodborne diseases has been demonstrated by epidemiological studies, and the adverse impact on the socio-economic development of countries has been also reported by health authorities. The combat against foodborne pathogens through the use of natural biosources has become the focus of recent research. Lichens produce several secondary metabolites with various biological activities including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-cancer etc. due to competition with other living things in their surrounding environment. In this perspective, we aimed to investigate the antibacterial properties of Usnea sp. that collected from Kastamonu, Turkey against five foodborne pathogens in the present study. These tested bacteria included both Gram-positive and Gram-negative ones. Our data demonstrated that the acetone extracts of Usnea sp. had antibacterial efficiencies especially against Gram-positive bacteria tested (C. perfringens, S. aureus, and B. cereus) at varying percentages. This potential antibacterial activity of Usnea sp. suggests that it can be used in the food industry. Since it has already been reported to be used in dishes or ingredients of bread, it gives the idea that it may be used as a food additive (such as a preservative, extending shelf life). However, detailed studies for its toxicity or the dosages that do not be toxic should be done.

The study investigated the hormonal activities of Sida rhombifolia ethanolic leaf extract on micronor induced infertility in female rats. Sida rhombifolia is a shrub from the family Malvaceae. Forty eight (48) female albino rats were randomly placed into six (6) study groups of eight (8) rats each. Positive control group (PC) was given clean water and food, micronor control group (MC) induced with micronor but not treated with Sida rhombifolia, Sida rhombifolia control groups; SRC, SRM1, SRM2, SRM3 were induced with micronor and treated with ethanolic leaf extract of Sida rhombifolia at varying concentrations of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg, and 400mg/kg body weight respectively for 14 days. Phytochemical screening, estrogen, luteinizing hormone, cholesterol and body weight indices were monitored in this research. Animals treated with Sida rhombifolia showed significant increase in estrogen and luteinizing hormone level (P<0.05) compared to the micronor control at varying concentrations. All treatment groups showed no significant difference (P<0.05) in cholesterol level compared positive control and micronor control.
