Drugs and prolactin

Abstract: Medications commonly cause hyperprolactinemia and their use must be differentiated from pathologic causes. The most common medications to cause hyperprolactinemia are the antipsychotic agents, although some of the newer atypical antipsychotics do not do so. Other medications causing hyperprolactinemia include antidepressants, antihypertensive agents, and drugs which increase bowel motility. Often, the medication-induced hyperprolactinemia is symptomatic, causing galactorrhea, menstrual disturbance, and erectil… Show more

“…Although PRL elevation is usually mild (25-100 ng/mL), in cases of drug-induced hyperprolactinemia, it is also highly variable (26). Indeed, metoclopramide, risperidone, and phenothiazines can lead to prolactin levels > 200 ng/mL (4,6,26).…”

“…If it is not possible to switch or withdraw the drug, hormonal replacement for hypogonadism is indicated, because dopamine agonists (DA) may oppose the beneficial antagonism of antipsychotic drugs (2). Aripiprazole, ziprasidone, and olanzapine are atypical antipsychotic drugs that do not cause hyperprolactinemia.…”
