Drugs against chloroquine antimalarial itch

Abstract: Bacl^round Limb activity meters are useful in correlation with subjective measurements for studying the antipruritic effects of drugs against current chloroquine itch among patients with malarial fever, in a tropical environment. Objective To prospectively monitor the palliative effects of drugs, without any presumptively significant antipuritic effects known, against moderate to severe chloroquine-related pruritus among patients with malaria. Methods Using a standard ordinal (0-10) scale questionnaire and lim… Show more

“…218 Dapsone (50 mg daily orally) reduced chloroquine-induced pruritus and limb-scratching activity significantly, whereas ketotifen, clemastine and prednisolone had no effect in a parallel-group trial. 222 Apart from the opioids and chloroquine, some drugs commonly reported to cause pruritus include angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and statins, although the list of potential drugs is extensive. 205 Interestingly, epidural dexamethasone has been associated with causing generalized pruritus.…”

“…However, there could be variation in intensity among them. Chloroquine-induced pruritus has been reported in up to 50% of Black-skinned Africans[ 15 18 ]. This occurs 6-24 h after administration (oral, parenteral) and lasts for 4-5 days.…”
