“…Increasingly, however, this assumption is viewed as erroneous. More recent publications, especially those drawing from locally based studies, highlight the extent to which substance use is significant and increasing within Asian American communities (Harachi, Catalano, Kim, & Choi, 2001;Ja & Aoki, 1993;Jang, 1996;Nemoto et al, 1999;O'Hare & Tran, 1998;Zane & Huh-Kim, 1994 Our previous research into the club drug use and the rave/dance/club scenes in the San Francisco area (see Hunt, Evans, Wu, and Reyes, 2005), combined with other local reports, indicated an increasing prominence of Asian Americans within club drug scenes, such as raves, warehouse parties, and dance clubs. We found numerous Asian American club promoters and event organizers and increasing numbers of Asian American youth attending clubs and dance events.…”

“…It may be the case that because alcohol use is so pervasive among APIs, the levels of education do not matter in terms of engaging in risky sexual behaviors after drinking. It is extremely difficult to reach out to APIs who use drugs, because they are not visible in the community and are less likely to be found in drug user networks at visible street drug scenes (Nemoto et al, 2000). Because of the stigma related to drug use, API drug users are hidden in the community.…”

“…A study among Filipino amphetamine users showed that they faced risk for HIV through unprotected sex, sex while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, injection drug use, and low rates of HIV testing (Nemoto, Operario, & Soma, 2002). Previous studies (Nemoto et al, 1999;Nemoto, Operario et al, 2003) clearly showed that both API MSM and substance users who are not MSM engage in risky sexual behaviors and sex under the influence of substances. However, past research studies do not provide a clear picture on the prevalence of HIV risk behaviors in API communities because studies tended to focus on one specific risk group, either API MSM or substance users.…”
