Drug repositioning

Abstract: Rapid advances in pharmacotherapy and bioinformatics has led to the discovery and growing popularity of drug repositioning which includes re-investigating or recycling of existing drugs for new indications. There are innumerable advantages as well as challenges of drug repositioning. Since de-novo drug discovery takes plenty of time, effort and money, it has proved to a preferred alternative strategy for accelerated drug discovery. Moreover it is relatively inexpensive and carries minimal risk due to availabil… Show more

“…Knowing that chemotherapy for schistosomiasis is still fragmentary; drug repurposing can be an alternative strategy to finding a cure for this acute disease. Drug repositioning involves investigating existing drugs and its application in treating non-related diseases for which they were not originally designed [117]. Although several researchers have studied various classes of drugs for anti-schistosomal effects, drugs used in treating cancers have also shown promising effects.…”

“…Ashburn and Thor (2004) defined drug repositioning as the process of finding a new indication for a drug which has already been approved. This method has proved to be the preferred alternative strategy for the fast-moving discovery of drugs, since it is relatively cheaper and represents a minimum risk to patients due to the availability of previous pharmacological, safety and toxicological data (Mehndiratta et al, 2016).…”

“…Thus, drug repositioning was an alternative approach as therapeutic switching or drug repurposing for already marketed drug with less time consuming and less costly 16 . It has proved to be a preferred strategy for accelerated drug discovery as a relatively inexpensive pathway that carries minimal risk due to availability of previous pharmacological, safety and toxicology data 17 with many successful suggested studies in the literature 18 33 .…”
