Drug-related deaths in a university central hospital

Abstract: Adverse drug reaction is a significant cause of death. Most of the deaths occurred in seriously ill patients with high-risk medication and they are seldom preventable. Incidence figures based on death certificates only may seriously underestimate the true incidence of fatal adverse reactions.

“…Knopf and Du reported an ADR occurrence rate of 0.9 % in a sample of 17,450 German children (outpatient setting, self-reported ADRs) [ 51 ]. The study that reported ADRs as a cause of death used intensive chart review to identify ADRs that contributed to the death of all patients who died during a 1-year period in a Finnish hospital (1511 deaths) [ 54 ]. They reported that 5 % of all deaths were caused by an ADR and that 0.05 % of all hospitalizations resulted in a fatal ADR [ 54 ].…”

“…ADRs are a major cause of morbidity and place a substantial burden on limited healthcare resources [2]. Multiple factors influence ADR susceptibility, including multiple drug therapy, disease severity, age, and the type and number of drugs prescribed [3-8].…”

“…Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and adverse drug events (ADEs) are involved in nearly 100,000 deaths in the United States of America each year, [1,2] and may have accounted for 5% of inpatient deaths [3] in a Swedish hospital. In France, a nationwide survey revealed that the incidence of severe ADEs during hospitalization is 7.6 per 1000 inpatient days [4]; of these, three severe ADEs per 1000 inpatient days may be preventable.…”
