Drug-Eluting Nitinol Stent Treatment of the Superficial Femoral Artery and Above-the-Knee Popliteal Artery (The Zilver PTX Single-Arm Clinical Study): A Comparison Between Diabetic and Nondiabetic Patients

Abstract: Diabetic and nondiabetic patients had similar estimates of primary patency, EFS, and freedom from TLR; however, diabetic patients showed less improvement in WIQ scores compared with nondiabetic patients.

“…Hiroyoshi Yokoi et al, in their study evaluating stents with paclitaxel, did not observe an association between the occurrence of pre-existing diabetes and the frequency of restenosis, which corresponds with the results presented in our study [9]. Similar research results have been presented in other publications [20,21]. Our study analyzed results in patients with diabetes in both stent groups: Significantly more frequent occurrence of restenosis was found in BMS-treated patients with diabetes during the 36-month follow-up in contrast to DES-treated patients.…”

“…These unanticipated results are in agreement with what has been previously reported for the DES [20,21]. While diabetes mellitus is commonly considered a risk factor for TLR following standard PTA and BMS, in this analysis diabetes did not have a significant impact, a finding previously reported in analyses of DES [22].…”

“…In the ZILVER PTX single-arm registry of long lesions (mean 22.6 cm), the 1-year primary patency rate was 77.6 % and freedom from TLR was 85.4 % for the paclitaxel-eluting stent [22,23]. Fanelli et al [24] reported in diabetic patients with TASC A to C lesions a 1-year primary patency rate of 86.6 % after paclitaxel-eluting stent placement. A common discussion is whether the occlusion of side branches with covered stents may cause acute limb ischemia once the covered stent occludes.…”
