“…It is necessary to stress that the majority of drought episodes are the result of precipitation deficits but enhanced AED may reinforce dry conditions and increase environmental/agricultural and hydrological drought severity, as observed in several cases, including central Europe in 2003 (Ciais et al, ; García‐Herrera, Díaz, Trigo, Luterbacher, & Fischer, ), Russia in 2010 (Barriopedro, Fischer, Luterbacher, Trigo, & Garcia‐Herrera, ; Miralles, Teuling, Van Heerwaarden, & De Arellano, ), and the 2017 Western Europe event (García‐Herrera et al, ). Figure characterizes the spatial evolution of the strong Western Europe 2017 drought (Figure b), which caused important environmental (Chiogna, Skrobanek, Narany, Ludwig, & Stumpp, ; Marchina, Natali, & Bianchini, ; Rita et al, ) and hydrological impacts (Vicente‐Serrano, Domínguez‐Castro, Camarero, & El Kenawy, ). The SPI (calculated with precipitation data only) shows precipitation deficit but no severe drought conditions, with the exceptions of Belgium and Italy (Figure b).…”
