Drought tolerance potential of Vigna mungo L. lines as deciphered by modulated growth, antioxidant defense, and nutrient acquisition patterns

Abstract: Water shortage is one of the major environmental constraints that hamper the crop productivity worldwide. The present study was aimed to examine the drought tolerance potential of seven cultivars/lines of Vigna mungo L. depending upon their germination behavior, seedling growth, antioxidative defense mechanism, and nutrient acquisition. An experiment was conducted in the growth chamber using petri-plates and laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD). Hoagland's nutrient solution supplemented with 12 % P… Show more

“…In present study α-Toc foliar application also increased the nutritional quality in terms of its own content in wheat seeds. It was found exogenous application of biochemicals/antioxidants not only regulates its own metabolism but also enhances the content of other antioxidative enzymes 5,42 and the content of non-enzymatic compounds 41 . Similar has been found in present study where α-Toc foliar application not only improved its metabolism in terms of increased content of α-Toc and γ-Toc but also other studied enzymatic and non-enzymatic compounds, as a result better seed nutritional quality in terms of antioxidative properties.…”

“…Global environmental changes have altered the ongoing rainfall patterns all over the world, resulting in drought stress in some areas and flooding in others [3]. Under such conditions, the demand for food is increasing due to the deleterious effects of drought on crop production [4,5]. Different ways or techniques are being employed to handle this problem and improve and conserve plants.…”

“…Vigna mungo (blackgram) is one of the most consumed grain legumes, cultivated mostly by the Asiatic populations for food and medicinal properties promoting nutritional benefits for human health 1,2 . Owing to its ability of symbiotic nitrogen fixation, blackgram seeds serve as a vital source of dietary protein.…”
