Drought-induced modifications of photosynthetic electron transport in intact leaves: Analysis and use of neural networks as a tool for a rapid non-invasive estimation

Abstract: Water deficit is one of the most important environmental factors limiting sustainable crop yields and it requires a reliable tool for fast and precise quantification. In this work we use simultaneously recorded signals of photoinduced prompt fluorescence (PF) and delayed fluorescence (DF) as well as modulated reflection (MR) of light at 820nm for analysis of the changes in the photosynthetic activity in detached bean leaves during drying. Depending on the severity of the water deficit we identify different cha… Show more

“…One possible reason for that can be decreased acceptor demands for photoassimilates during a stress, which most frequently results from their inhibited growth. During a drought, when potato tubers are poorly supplied with nutrients, starch accumulation is induced in chloroplasts (Gotsev et al, 2012). Starch is also accumulated in leaves due to various disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism or in the case of phosphorus deficits (Starck, 2014).…”

“…Change in Chl fluorescence signal is generally considered as a sensitive indicator of many types of stressors including pathogen infection (Skoczowski et al 2011, Strasser et al 2010, Goltsev et al 2012. In this work, the JIP test model was applied in order to acquire information about changes in the light phase (PSII efficiency) in virusinfected plants.…”

“…B-P neural network is a method that needs not to know the mapping relationship between a set of independent predictor variables and response variables. Each individual neuron in the nervous system is independent and essentially works alone (Goltsev et al 2012). Moreover, it has the advantage of the input signals stimulating network capability to learn and recognize patterns (Samborska et al 2014).…”
