“…For example, drought may affect RL with decrease (Guha, Rasineni, & Reddy, 2010), increase (Chiatante, Di Iorio, & Scippa, 2005;Manoharan et al, 2010), or no effect (Mori & Inagaki, 2012;Yang et al, 2012). Similarly, the responses of other root traits (e.g., RD, SRL) to drought also varied (Asfaw & Blair, 2012;Eldhuset et al, 2013;Fotelli, Geßler, Peuke, & Rennenberg, 2001). These highly diverse results may result from the difference in extent of drought and speed at which soil moisture is depleted (Chapin, Matson, & Mooney, 2002;Comas, Becker, Cruz, Byrne, & Dierig, 2013).…”

“…These results might be attributed to the following mechanisms. First, drought stress could directly increase RM by depleting starch and sugar reserves (Maguire & Kobe, 2015) and indirectly inhibit photosynthate transportation to the root system (Hasibeder, Fuchslueger, Fritz, Richter, & Bahn, 2014;Marshall, 1986 decreases root production (Eldhuset et al, 2013;Nagajothi, Sheeba, & Bangarusamy, 2014).…”

“…However, studies on anatomical adaptation of Norway spruce needles to drought are rare and seem to be limited to our recent greenhouse study on 5‐year‐old plants (Eldhuset et al. ) and a study on needle vascular cylinder area in young saplings in open‐top chambers (Kivimäenpää et al. ).…”

“…It is congruent with study on 80 years old spruces in the first and the second year with the same experimental design (Pešková et al, 2015) and in roots with diameter up to 2 mm on 140 years old spruces after six weeks of water exclusion induced by shelters (Gaul et al, 2008). On the other hand, the influence of drought on root weight has been observed to be negative in roots with diameter up to 1 mm in spruces 12 years old in all four years of the experiment (Palátová, 2004), in roots with diameter up to 2 mm in trees 5 years old, exposed to 11-year reduced watering in greenhouse (Eldhuset et al, 2013) and in young spruce stands in natural conditions, monitored for four years (Konôpka et al, 2013). These contradictory results are suggesting that the response of fine root biomass to drought is not uniform.…”
