Driving Waveform Design of Electrowetting Displays Based on an Exponential Function for a Stable Grayscale and a Short Driving Time

Abstract: The traditional driving waveform of the electrowetting display (EWD) has many disadvantages, such as the large oscillation of the target grayscale aperture ratio and a long time for achieving grayscale. Therefore, a driving waveform based on the exponential function was proposed in this study. First, the maximum driving voltage value of 30 V was obtained by testing the hysteresis curve of the EWD pixel unit. Secondly, the influence of the time constant on the driving waveform was analyzed, and the optimal time… Show more

“…A damping oscillation refers to the process in which the amplitude of vibration can be gradually decreased over time. As shown in Equations (6) and 7, the characteristic of a damped oscillation is that the amplitude gradually is decreased. Therefore, the intensity of the electric field applied to the pixel gets lower and lower in the driving waveform.…”

“…In recent years, electronic paper displays, which are a new type of display, have occupied a certain share in the display market due to its advantages such as large viewing angle, light in mass, low power consumption, repetitive erasing, and readability under sunlight [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. As a kind of electronic paper display, electrophoretic displays (EPDs) have an excellent performance in the field of device manufacturing, which is expected to become one of the mainstream technologies for next-generation displays [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. The charged particles in traditional EPDs are black electrophoretic particles with a positive charge and white electrophoretic particles with a negative charge [ 9 ].…”

“…For application of the electric signal, a proper driving waveform can not only achieve a good optical performance, but also improves the stability of the gray level [ 13 ]. The display performance refers to the image quality (e.g., reflectivity, brightness, resolution).…”

“…As a new optical reflective display device, electrowetting displays (EWDs) have been greatly developed. EWDs have the advantages of ultra-low power consumption, high contrast, fast response and full-color [1]. The concept of EWDs was first proposed by G. Beni [2,3].…”
