The paper presents pursuits of the truth in building materials engineering. Some definitions of "what truth is" were presented. Partial truths were specified: the truth of scientific reasoning, the truth of scientific assessment, the truth of development directions and the splendour of scientific truth. All categories are addressed to the building materials engineering. In the chapter "Load capacity and stability vs entropy" definitions of entropy and exergy were presented followed by their influence on building construction, illustrated by the "Seneca cliff" and "Energy pyramid". Chapter 3 presents the truth of scientific reasoning was presented. Three partial truths were indicated: the truth of experimental fact, the truth of scientific reasoning and the truth of scientific presentation. In the chapter "Truth of scientific assessment" two main assessment methods were presented: peer review and a bibliometric parametric assessment as well as their impact on the results and authors. The risks associated with the sole parametric assessment were shown as the two basic factors of a parametric assessment -citation number and Hirsch index -need time to "mature". Additionally, the influence of digitalisation of the assessment of a scientist and a scientific unit on the commoditisation and dehumanisation of science was outlined. In the chapter "Truth of development directions: defined past -fuzzy future" the megatrends observed in technology in the last few decades years were indicated along with new possible trends. Milestones in the development of C-PCs (Concrete-Polymer Composites) were presented. The new paradigm for the new development cycle was proposed.

Decades ago, an implantation of polymer into concrete has taken an effect in Concrete Polymer Composites, C-PC – new concrete classes and since that time a constant developmentpolymers in concretetechnology has been observed. The object of the study in short definition has been described and classified. The meaning ofpolymer better concreteas well ashow polymer improves the concretehas been explained. It has been analyzed and stressed that the polymer function in concrete is much higher than one could deduct from their mass share. The reason for that is synergy effect – the result of cooperation of polymers with other components of concrete. The recognition and using of synergic effects is the main but not only one direction of research works. Thepolymer in concrete productto be attractive on the market should fit up away growing demands of application and be based on the current status of knowledge. It means persistent and online resolvingMaterial Model – Performance Modelrelation. Long time study on the modelling of cement hydration and polymer hardening process in Polymer Cement Concrete proved how significant is the idea/theory in technology development. Currently great expectation has been demonstrated towards Water-Soluble Polymers, WSP as nanomodifier of great potentiality. Various types of polymers in various amounts can be used for C-PC; even the polymer of the same type can be differentiated by the structure of polymer chain (length, branching) – this creates almost unlimited area of the control performance of C-PC. Outcome of the past ASPIC and ICPIC Congresses confirms that the research efforts have been always oriented on the engineering results based on the material microstructure understanding. The role of polymers in concrete could be not overestimated.

The Effect of Nano-Silica Particles on Fresh and Hardened State Properties of Polymer Cement Mortars

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) was used in the amounts of 5, 10 and 15% of the cement content in the production of polymer cement mortars. Besides, nanosilica, in three different sizes of 35, 17 and 4 nm, were included in the mortars. The addition of nanosilica particles in polymer cement concretes and mortars affects both fresh and hardened state properties. The extremely high surface area of nanoparticles increases the water demand; hence to obtain a workable mixture it is necessary to increase the superplasticizer used. In the hardened state, the strength and impermeability properties improve due to both pozzolanic reaction and filler effect of nanosilica particles as well as polymer film formation. The flow properties in the fresh state and flexural and compressive strength properties in the hardened state were determined.
