Driving forces behind increasing cardiovascular drug utilization: a dynamic pharmacoepidemiological model

Abstract: WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT• Several studies indicate that switch to more expensive drugs and increasing treatment intensity, rather than population ageing have been responsible for rising drug expenditures during the 1990s.• Little is known about the driving forces behind the increasing treatment intensity with cardiovascular drugs. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS• This study provides a new pharmacoepidemiological method to analyse drug utilization trends, applying dispensing data at the individual level.• … Show more

“…As changes in drug treatment prevalence are governed by the underlying fundamental quantities of incidence, mortality, and discontinuation of treatment [2], we opted to apply changes in treatment incidence as a proxy for changes in drug prescribing and purchasing behaviour, reserving discontinuation of treatment (adherence) to a forthcoming study.…”

“…While a range of studies have explored the increasing statin utilization according to gender and age [2,4,[22][23][24][25], others have demonstrated that guideline implementation tend to increase in drug utilization [4,5,26]. However, it has been questioned whether statins are prescribed to those who benefit most i.e.…”

“…Although the first drug information center (DIC)s were established decades ago in US and Europe, there is currently no DIC in Serbia nor any other source for problem oriented drug information [17]. Consequently there was a need for educational activities in order to increase the use of cardiovascular drugs.…”
