Driver assistance via optical information with spatial reference

Abstract: The occurrence of accidents caused by deficiencies in risk recognition by the driver can be prevented by presenting relevant information in real time to the driver. In this paper it is proposed to draw the driver's attention towards relevant traffic objects, which might be a safety hazard, by a LED strip which is affixed 360° around the interior of the car's cabin. With this approach a higher number of use cases can be covered than with existing HMIs. The effectiveness of this system is evaluated in a driving … Show more

“…The few negative statements concern among other things the braking behavior of the vehicle ("too late," "too abrupt"), the maneuver delegation concept ("annoying"), the Safety Bubble in the cluster instrument ("not intuitive"), and the LED stripe ("not easy to understand"). Nevertheless, eye-tracking measures gave evidence to the efficiency and good comprehensibility of the PRORETA 3 LED stripe concept (Pfromm et al 2013).…”

“…The driver is thus just informed and warned, which is additionally amplified by a directional audible warning signal and LED stripes (Fig. 7.5d), which are activated in red at the specific location [197]. An infrared driver monitoring camera mounted behind the steering wheel (Fig.…”

“…Using their implementation led to earlier and more constant deceleration. Pfromm et al developed a 360° light display [5]. Their display shows position of and distance to other traffic objects and thereby direct a driver's attention to critical ones.…”
