Protecting water quality and maintaining profitable corn (Zea mays L.) production requires diagnostics that can distinguish between N deficiency, sufficiency, and excess. This study evaluates initial recommendations on blacklayer basal‐stalk NO3–N ranges and critical concentrations for diagnosing N status, and it compares the performance of this test with grain analysis. Observations (428) were collected from 13 N‐response experiments. Linear response and plateau (LRP) and binary logistic regression (BLR) were used to characterize the relationships between yield and tissue‐test values. With the LRP, stalk NO3–N and grain N concentrations separating deficient from sufficient observations were 0.42 and 13.1 g kg−1, respectively, and the success rates of the two tests were comparable (77 and 75%, respectfully). The BLR also identified critical concentrations, but the values increased with decreasing yields, a desirable decision‐rule attribute given that extreme deficiency can result in higher‐than‐expected tissue concentrations. The success rates of multiple BLR functions using yield and stalk or grain analysis as factors were again comparable (88 and 87%, respectively), but they were significantly greater than with the LRP analysis. Stalk analysis was superior to grain analysis for distinguishing sufficiency from excess. A constant stalk NO3–N concentration (1.67 g kg−1) separated sufficient from excessive cases, and fertilizer efficiency approached zero at 2.9 g kg−1. Premature sampling resulted in stalk NO3–N levels that were 40 to 600% greater than levels observed after blacklayer formation, with the greatest error occurring when N fertility was low. When not testing for N excess, the advantages of grain analysis are the ease of sampling during harvest and the reduced risk of error associated with premature sampling.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar os diagnósticos do estado nutricional de um conjunto de 111 lavouras comerciais de soja, pelos métodos: Sistema Integrado de Diagnose e Recomendação (DRIS) e Diagnose da Composição Nutricional (CND), com uso do conceito de potencial de resposta à adubação. Nas lavouras analisadas, observou-se que Zn, P e Fe foram os nutrientes diagnosticados por ambos os métodos como os mais limitantes pela ausência, e Mg e Mn os mais limitantes por excesso. A freqüência de lavouras com diagnósticos concordantes, quanto ao potencial de resposta à adubação, foi maior para os nutrientes considerados de maior deficiência relativa (90,3%), em relação aos considerados de maior excesso relativo (81,9%). Quando se avaliaram os diagnósticos concordantes quanto ao estado nutricional, a freqüência variou de 85,9% para o P a 98,6% para o Mn. Os métodos DRIS e CND tendem a ser concordantes quanto ao diagnóstico nutricional; o agrupamento de classes de potencial de resposta à adubação pode resultar no agrupamento, em uma única classe de estado nutricional, os nutrientes com alta e baixa probabilidade de resposta à adubação.Termos para indexação: Glycine max, diagnose foliar, deficiência nutricional. It was observed that zinc, phosphorus and iron were the nutrients diagnosed by both methods as the more restrictive for lack, and magnesium and manganese the more restrictive for excess. Agreement between DRIS and CND diagnoses was higher for nutrients considered of greater relative deficiency (90.3%) than for those considered of greater relative excess (81.9%). When the classes of nutritional state were evaluated, the frequency of plantations with concordant diagnosis varied from 85.9% for phosphorus to 98.6% for manganese. DRIS and CND methods tend to be consonants about nutritional status diagnoses; classes grouping of potential response to fertilization may result in grouping in one class of nutritional state nutrients with high and low probability of response.

The diagnosis of plant nutritional status that aims to balance essential elements in the plant is of utmost importance for sustainable agriculture. Nutritional diagnosis is a technique that has been implemented to maximize the economic return from fertilization and minimize losses to the environment. A balance can be defined as a relationship between components interacting in plant tissue, where some nutrients may be present in excess, deficiency or sufficiency. Diagnostic methods have been evolving constantly, allowing to interpret nutrient levels in isolation to more complex methods accounting for nutrient interactions.Additional keywords: Plant nutrition, nutrient composition, nutrient interaction, compositional nutrient diagnosis. ResumoA diagnose nutricional, ou seja, o conhecimento sobre o equilíbrio entre os elementos essenciais no tecido vegetal, é uma técnica empregada para elevar ao máximo o retorno econômico nas explorações agrícolas, preservando de forma racional o ambiente. O equilíbrio pode ser comparado a uma balança de pratos, na qual os nutrientes podem estar presentes em excesso, deficientes ou em teores adequados (informação relativa), considerando-se o teor dos demais componentes.
