Drillstring With Aluminum Alloy Pipes Design and Practices

Abstract: The up-to-date aluminum drill pipes design made it possible to develop ultra-long drillstrings for super-deep and extended reach wells. The new generation software providing for drillstring analysis including consideration of drillpipe tool joints and pads in buckling helical loads evaluation. Drill string dynamics is also taken into account. The case studies of ADP application proved their benefits over the steel ones, and recent analysis have shown an opportunity to design a super-long 15,000 m well and this… Show more

“…Even at low values of friction coefficient, the failure could not be avoided for small mandrel cone angles and large expansion ratios. Researchers have tried aluminum tubular due to its improved formability as compared to steel, but the severity of down-hole environment excludes this possibility [21,22].…”

“…In drilling operations this is synonymous of a higher drill pipe distorsion in the wellbore and a buckling risk. A small number of theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted on the risk of buckling for steel, aluminium and titanium drill pipes (Smith et al 2 , Gelfgat et al 1,4 ,Akgun et al 5 ). In the following section we will discuss the drill pipe buckling studies and theory.…”

“…In the last two decades, different authors have pointed out to the oil industry community the advantages that aluminum alloys (AAs) may present for tubular manufacturing because, compared to steel, the length of the AA pipe would be two times longer than that of a steel one. This feature has allowed the development of aluminum drill pipes (ADPs) with excellent potential in well-extended reach drilling of 15 km. The manufacturing of ADPs was extensively used in the former Soviet Union, starting in the second half of the 1950s.…”

“…The manufacturing of ADPs was extensively used in the former Soviet Union, starting in the second half of the 1950s. In the last decade, the use of aluminum drilling riser strings in deep waters of offshore Brazil and the Eagle Ford formation in Texas resulted in the increase of studies on the application of light metal alloys including casing and tubing, expandable tubular technology, hybrid riser configurations, fatigue analysis of drill pipes, steel pipe coatings, and geothermal drilling. , …”
