Fiber Optic Gyroscope Inertial Navigation System (FOG-INS) is a navigation system using fiber optic gyroscopes and accelerometers, which can offer high-precision position, velocity, and attitude information for carriers. FOG-INS is widely used in aerospace, marine ships, and vehicle navigation. In recent years, it has also played an important role in underground space. For example, in the deep earth, FOG-INS can be used in directional well drilling, which can enhance recovery in resource exploitation. While, in shallow earth, FOG-INS is a high-precision positioning technique that can guide construction in trenchless underground pipelaying. This article extensively reviews the application status and latest progress of FOG-INS in underground space from three aspects—FOG inclinometer, FOG drilling tool attitude measurement while drilling (MWD) unit, and FOG pipe-jacking guidance system. First, measurement principles and product technologies are introduced. Second, the research hot spots are summarized. Finally, the key technical issues and future trends for development are put forward. The findings of this work are useful for further research in the field of FOG-INS in underground space, which not only provides new ideas and directions for scientific research, but also offers guidance for subsequent engineering applications.

The drill string used in drilling is in a complex motion state downhole for several kilometers. The operating attitude and eccentricity of the downhole drill string play important roles in avoiding downhole risks and correcting the output of the imaging measurement sensor while drilling (IMWD). This paper proposes a method for measuring eccentricity while drilling using two sets of caliper sensors coupled with a fiber-optic gyroscope for continuous attitude measurement, which is used to solve the problem of the quantitative measurement of complex eccentricity that changes in real-time downhole. According to the measurement and calculation methods involved in this article, we performed simulations of the attitude of the drill string near where the IMWD tool is located in the wellbore under a variety of complex downhole conditions, such as centering, eccentricity, tilt, buckling, rotation, revolution, etc. The simulation and field test results prove that the distance between the imaging while drilling sensor and the borehole wall is greatly affected by the downhole attitude and revolution. The multi-sensor layout measurement scheme and the data processing based on the above-mentioned measurement involved can push the drill collar movement and eccentricity matrix specifically studied downhole from only qualitative estimation to real-time measurement and quantitative calculation. The above measurement and data processing methods can accurately measure and identify the local operating posture of the drill string where the IMWD sensor is located, and quantitatively give the eccentric distance matrix from the measuring point to the borehole wall required for environmental correction of the IMWD sensor.

A Novel Method of Parallel Computing Based North-Finding of the Satcom-On-The-Move System and Its Simulation

This paper presents a new north-finding method of the Satcom-On-The-Move (SOTM) system based on parallel computing. The characteristic of this method is that sets a range for the existence of north-pointing true value according to a piece of initial north-pointing information, selects several equally divided north-pointing value within this range. Take the value of each point as multiple initial north-pointing information, then calculate the position information accumulated over time, and compare the calculated position information with the position information obtained by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Gradually reduce the value range of the true value of the north-pointing information until the position information obtained with the GNSS is less than a certain error range, then the initial north-pointing information value of the minimum error is obtained, which is approximately equal to the accurate value of the north-pointing information. The proposed algorithm is verified by a simulation case, and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
