Abstract-In oil and gas drilling, corrosion or tensile stress can give small holes in the drillstring, which can cause leakage and prevent sufficient flow of drilling fluid. If such washout remains undetected and develops, the consequence can be a complete twist-off of the drillstring. Aiming at early washout diagnosis, this paper employs an adaptive observer to estimate friction parameters in the nonlinear process. Non-Gaussian noise is a nuisance in the parameter estimates, and dedicated generalized likelihood tests are developed to make efficient washout detection with the multivariate t-distribution encountered in data. Change detection methods are developed using logged sensor data from a horizontal 1400 m managed pressure drilling test rig. Detection scheme design is conducted using probabilities for false alarm and detection to determine thresholds in hypothesis tests. A multivariate approach is demonstrated to have superior diagnostic properties and is able to diagnose a washout at very low levels. The paper demonstrates the feasibility of fault diagnosis technology in oil and gas drilling.

As production on the Norwegian shelf enters tail production, drilling wells with vanishing pressure windows become more attractive. This motivates use of automatic control systems for improved control of downhole pressure using Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) techniques. PID SISO control solutions for MPD are by now relatively standard, and well understood. This article explores the potential benefits of using linear Model Predictive Control (MPC) for MPD. It is shown that in combination with wired drill pipe, the downhole pressure can be controlled at multiple locations in the open wellbore, by using both pumps and choke in applied backpressure MPD. Also, downhole pressure constraints (pore and fracture pressures) fit naturally in MPC. Illustrative simulations are presented from using a high fidelity well simulator called WeMod, and Statoil's MPC software SEPTIC.

Abstract:This paper presents a constrained finite horizon model predictive control (MPC) scheme for regulation of the annular pressure in a well during managed pressure drilling from a floating vessel subject to heave motion. In addition the robustness of a controller to deal with heave disturbances despite uncertainties in the friction factor and bulk modulus is investigated. The stochastic model describing sea waves in the North Sea is used to simulate the heave disturbances. The results show that the closed-loop simulation without disturbance has a fast regulation response, without any overshoot, and is better than a proportional-integralderivative (PID) controller. The constrained MPC for managed pressure drilling shows further improved disturbance rejection capabilities with measured or predicted heave disturbance. Monte Carlo simulations show that the constrained MPC has a good performance to regulate set point and attenuate the effect of heave disturbance in case of significant uncertainties in the well parameter values.
